Program

Program has provides a unique method of household flea control which so long as the product recommendations are followed should provide a long acting, easy and safe method of flea control for your cat. The following points explain its mode of action and how to gain maximum benefit from the product.

General Information

  • Available for use in cats in an injectable and an oral ampoule preparation.

  • It is a flea ‘contraceptive’ which prevents the flea egg hatching. The outer skeleton of the flea is made of a substance called chitin. Program stops chitin forming and this prevents the flea egg larvae from emerging from the flea egg. This stops all breeding by fleas which have taken a bite from a cat treated with Program.

  • Mammals don’t have chitin in their bodies so Program is very safe to use in the cat. There are no contra-indications to Program use.

  • Kittens can have Program as soon as they have been weaned.

  • Program can be used at the same time as vaccination or with any other drug therapy and in pregnant cats.

  • The injectable form is administered under the skin every 6 months and the oral preparation given monthly.

  • It is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) and must be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon.

  • Program comes in two sizes, for small and large cats.

Points to note

  • It does not kill fleas.

  • If your cat and house has a flea infestation, a flea control program should be put into effect. See Flea Control

  • Program will decontaminate a house of  cat flea eggs and larvae after several months use and once achieved will keep the house virtually flea free.

  • All cats and dogs in the house must be on Program at the same time.

  • If a cat meets fleas outside the house they might bring a few adult cat fleas into the house. They will be sterilised immediately and so no household infestation will occur.

  • Program does not work against ticks.

  • Program ampoules are still available and are considerably cheaper but have to be given with food every month.

  • 99% of flea problems reported are due to fleas breeding in the house. Program will stop this occurring if used according to manufacturers and veterinary directions.
